Are You Absolutely Certain Reading This is Your Goal?
Is reading this article what you should be doing with your life?
If you know yourself perfectly, then the answer should be no. Just stop here and move on with your day.
If you have even the slightest doubt, you might want to read on.
Good? Seems you decided to stay on so let’s dive right in.
Here’s a simple fact I guess most people would agree with:
We are spending most of our day in an automated state.
We wake up, get dressed, go to work/school, eat a few times a day and go to bed at night. During this time, certain tasks take more attentional space than others.
Those are the ones that actually matter. Whether we want it or not, we spend a large part of our life acting automatically based on two things:
- Habits we have and do so repeatedly we barely even think of them.
- Reactions based on our previous experiences. This includes simple discussions we may have with acquaintances.
Now, let’s say you’ve set a goal in your life. You have thought hard and long about it and you’ve written down a mission statement for your life which has allowed you to progress towards that goal.
Great isn’t it?
But now that time has passed, you’ve been letting yourself go. Not that you decided to do so. Steps towards it have become a routine in themselves and the intention you put every single day in the past is long gone.
Every morning, you wake up and get to that goal automatically and as soon as you’re done with the task itself, you forget it for the rest of the day. Maybe, you’ve even botched it.
But here’s the trick.
As Hyperfocus author Chris Bailey states in his book:
“The state of your attentional space determines the state of your life.”
To put it in even simpler terms, how you direct your attention directly impacts the results you will get.
Setting goals is great. No questions here. However, don’t forget to recenter and reevaluate yourself. It’s just that simple. Know yourself, both in the future AND now.
If you’re still reading along with this tiny post, there has to be something wrong with you!
You should have already stopped reading and started looking within yourself again. You should be making the intentional decision of redirecting your life towards your future by checking within yourself now.
If you’re still lost and want to procrastinate some more, I guess I have no choice but to redirect you to do it in a positive way and learn more about finding your goal, right?
