If you feel the motivation to learn a language like Japanese but need to learn Hindu too, why not learn both at the same time? Of course, the speed at which you’d improve would be slower, but it’s not a race. I’m sure your daughter and her boyfriend would be glad to hear you say a few words, and you’d still be able to enjoy discovering Japanese too.

I don’t know much about Hindu, but there’s a lot of vocabulary taken from English and other western languages used in Japanese, all written in Katakana. It’ll be a breeze to remember those at least.
